Production has been shrouded in secrecy because, hey, it’s a Christopher Nolan film, but here at last is our first decent, albeit brief, look at the upcoming WWII epic, Dunkirk. And it is impressive.

Starring Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branagh, the film recreates one of the great moments of modern military history, 1940’s the Miracle of Dunkirk, which saw over 300,000 cut-off Allied soldiers rescued from annihilation by a flotilla of naval and civilian ships over the course of ten days. It’s the civilian element that really pushes it over the line: hundreds of merchant vessels, fishing boats, pleasure craft and even life boats jumped over the English Channel to partake in the rescue operation, and although what we’ve seen so far of Nolan’s film focuses on the military aspect, it’s this aspect that promises to be the most interesting.

Dunkirk is set for a July 2017 release.
