Well, it’s hard to say, but that’s the none-more-brief teaser that Welsh director Gareth Evans (The Raid, The Raid 2, Merantau) posted to his Instagram account to presage the imminent arrival of his next feature, The Apostle, which is due to land on Netflix in the not-too-distant future. Judging by the imagery, which leans towards both the religious and horrific, this one will not involve the great Iko Uwais (Mile 22, Beyond Skyline) kicking dudes to death, nor is a late-career triumph from Robert Duvall – so what’s it all about?
“The year is 1905. Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) travels to a remote island to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a mysterious religious cult (led by Michael Sheen!) demanding a ransom for her safe return. It soon becomes clear that the cult will regret the day it baited this man, as he digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built.”
The vibe we’re getting is more than a bit The Wicker Man, don’t you think? As is Netflix’s wont, further details are scant, but a full trailer is due on the 17th.
