“Runt is a story that is defiant in its message of hope. It’s about kindness, generosity, resilience, and compassion, and it encourages its audience to live their true and better selves. There’s a lot of darkness in the world right now, and this film will be a big ray of sunshine,” said author/screenwriter Craig Silvey upon the announcement that his latest novel, Runt, is to be adapted into a feature film.
Produced by Jamie Hilton (Go, Breath, Swinging Safari), directed by John Sheedy (H is for Happiness), Runt will star Deborah Mailman, Jack Thompson, Matt Day, Tom Budge, Genevieve Lemon, Celeste Barber and Jai Courtney, who will be returning to Perth, where he studied at WAAPA.

“I’m a parochial Western Australian storyteller, and I’m especially proud that we will be showcasing the landscapes and architecture and community spirit of the Wheatbelt region through the town of Upson Downs,” said Silvey, whose book Jasper Jones was also adapted in Western Australia.
Runt is a comedic family drama, which tells the story of an 11-year-old and her best friend, the titular stray. The pair try to save the family farm by competing in a dog show in London. Playing the leads are Lily La Torre (Run Rabbit Run) and Squid.
“Together, we are crafting a feel-good movie that promises to take the audience on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, from belly laughs to heartfelt moments, all while exuding endless charm,” said John Sheedy.
