Going in Style
This modern telling of the 1979 original sees three old age pensioners, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin, existing purely on their government pensions, before their bank effectively robs them of the pension pots. Understandably angered by being robbed by the banks, the trio flip the tables and instead hatch a plan to rob the bank that did them wrong in the first place, even reducing them to eating dog food. Despite not knowing how to handle a gun, the gang go ahead with their plot with hilarious consequence in this crumbly crime caper that has former Scrubs star Zach Braff in the driving seat.
Brad’s Status
Despite having a rewarding career with a good income that keeps his family happy in their nice house within a nice neighbourhood, Brad cannot shake the feelings of failure that wash over him. Nothing sets these feelings off quite like the better fortunes of his old friends from school with whom he later confesses as much while escorting his son on an East Coast tour of colleges. It might not sound like a potential laugh riot but this social media based comedy was produced by Brad Pitt and stars Ben Stiller in the lead role, so it comes with plenty of pedigree.
The House
What would you do if you lost your daughter’s college fund? Well, if you’re Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler then you take your crazy neighbour’s advice and open an illegal casino in your basement that’s what. Naturally, this is bad advice and trouble with the law and society’s criminal underbelly follow along swiftly. If you can’t wait for this movie, released in late June, then get warmed up by playing pokies at an online casino which is more convenient, safe, secure and, above all, a lot more fun than in a basement casino.
Zeroville (pictured)
Zeroville’s plot revolves around a 1960s architecture student and cinephile who moves to Hollywood and finds work as a film editor, before discovering the frames of a secret film hidden within the reels of every movie ever made. If you need proof that this one will be funny, just take a look at the cast which reads like a comedy who’s who. Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Megan Fox, Jacki Weaver and James Franco all appear here.
Downsizing
Matt Damon heads an all-star cast that also includes Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Alec Baldwin, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jason Sudeikis in this science fiction comedy, due for release before Christmas. It’s an unusual premise, but one that’s intriguing too, as a man and his wife who have hit a wall with life and come to the drastic conclusion that their best move is to physically shrink themselves down and relocate to a community for tiny folk. Sadly for the man, at the very last moment, his wife backs out leaving him to deal with the new situation alone.
