The Byron Bay Film Festival returns for 2017, running from October 6 – 15. This year’s theme is “Cinema for the Senses”, and tickets for the opening and closing night events are on sale now, with tickets for other sessions going up on September 27. This is the BBFF’s 11th year, with the festival now encompassing over 175 films screening in six locations.

This year’s opening film is the documentary The Freedom to Marry, Eddie Rosenstein’s account of the long battle for LGBTQI+ equality in the US, from the Stonewall riot to the recent Supreme Court decision that inaugurated marriage equality at the federal level.

Lliam Worthington’s debut feature, the terrorism drama One Less God, is making its Australian premiere at the 2017 BBFF. Inspired by the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, the film follows the perspectives of both hostages and terrorists during the Taj Mahal Hotel siege.

Also screening this year is the eco-documentary Blue, a heartfelt look at the damage being wrought on Earth’s oceans; the whimsical modern fairy tale, Brigsby Bear; feminist fable Howl; the stunning art documentary Loving Vincent, an entirely hand-painted paean to Van Gogh; the wildly successful Aussie indie comedy That’s Not Me; the one take crime drama, Watch the Sunset, and many more.
