Holy heck, it seems that the long-delayed Avatar 2 (and 3, and 4, and 5) is actually moving forward, with returning star Sigourney Weaver telling an interviewer that she’ll be doing 3D capture “in the fall” (that’s autumn to us).
“We’re starting! We’re starting training, and we’re starting — hm, I probably can’t say anything. We will be actually shooting it by the fall.” Weaver told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m telling you, these scripts are so amazing. I’m not worried about [disappointing fans] at all. Am I worried about how we’re going to bring them to life? Yes, because they’re so ambitious. They’re so worth it. They’re well worth waiting for. I’m not worried about that at all. We’re trying to get it done as quickly as possible.”
This comes after news that the sci-fi sequel, which returns us to the briefly popular rainforest otherworld of Pandora, will not be coming out in 2018, as previously announced. That means we’re looking at decade between drinks, seeing as Avatar came out in 2009 (and now we feel old).
Canny Avatarians will recall the Weaver’s character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died in the original film, but she’s not the only fatality set to return – Stephen Lang is also on board for the sequels (well, at least one of ’em), which could presage the return of badass villain Miles Quaritch, or some variation thereof. Possibly there’ll be cloning involved, or something to do with Pandora’s neural-network forest. Hell, technically Sam Worthington’s character died too, and he’s the hero. We’re sure it’ll all make sense in context. Probably.
Avatar 2 is in cinemas at some point in the future, if cinemas still exist by then.
