“We were all captivated by this heart-warming story of resilience, the power of family and hope. We’re thrilled to have the supremely talented Andrew Lincoln on board to bring the Blooms’ story to audiences around the world,” said producers Emma Cooper and Naomi Watts, and Made Up Stories’ Bruna Papandrea, Jodi Matterson and Steve Hutensky, in a statement.

Andrew Lincoln will play Cameron Bloom, the husband of Sam Bloom (Watts), in this true story about a unique little bird that saves a family, struggling to come to terms with a near-fatal accident that left their mother paralyzed. As they learn to adjust to her new situation, an unlikely ally entered their lives in the form of an injured Magpie chick. The family dubbed her ‘Penguin.’

The book on which the film is based is written by Bradley Trevor Greive and Cameron Bloom, whose photographs are featured in the book.

Behind the camera is Palme d’Or winning director Glendyn Ivin (Safe Harbour, The Cry, Puberty Blues), with a script by by Shaun Grant (Jasper Jones, Snowtown) and Harry Cripps (upcoming The Dry).

Shooting commences in Sydney in August.
