Aging, coming to terms with your legacy, contending with a younger, leaner, meaner generation – these are heady themes for a movie geared towards six-year-old boys, but Cars 3 is all about that regret and reflection, it seems. This could be Pixar’s Logan.
Well, nah, probably not – surely the trailers are leaning harder into these themes than the eventual film will. Still, it’s hard not see parallels between this flick and any number of “old warhorse” narratives. This trailer in particular, with its focus on the racing science going into the training and construction of young buck Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), brings to mind the training regimen of Rocky IV’s Ivan Drago, as portrayed in one of that film’s seemingly endless montages. Is there a steroid equivalent in the Cars universe? Then Jackson will be on it. Will Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) grow a beard and train in the snow? Doubtful.
Cars 3 roars into Australian cinemas on June 22, 2017.
