Two rather fantastic new posters dropped today for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, which sees Fast & Furious mastermind Justin Lin sub in for JJ “I always preferred Star Wars” Abrams. And here they are:

Great, aren’t they? It’s the classical elements that really work – the warp speed distortion on the Enterprise in the first one and the overall linear composition of the second harks back to a visual pattern that began in 1979 with the posters for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Sure, in the new universe transporter beams don’t look like that, but in our collective heart of hearts we know what transporter beams are supposed to look like; the visual echo, if not the exact detail, is inarguable.
It used to be that every odd-numbered Star Trek movie was shit, to quote Simon Pegg in Spaced, but the new series of films seems determined to buck that trend. We find out when Stark Trek Beyond boldly goes into Australian cinemas on July 26.
