3. The Power of the Dog
This 2021 movie was directed by Jane Campion and secured an IMDB rating of 6.8. If your attention span isn’t your strong suit, you may want to give this one a miss. It has a slow, but intense build up that can test your patience a bit, but those that stuck with it claim it was worth the wait. The movie is based on a 1967 novel by Thomas Savage that goes by the same name.

4. The Lost Daughter
The Lost Daughter is a 2021 psychological thriller with a 6.7 IMDB rating. Olivia Colman, a college professor, is on vacation when she meets a young mother (played by Dakota Johnson) with her daughter and this starts to bring back traumatic memories of her own adolescent motherhood. It does not take long before Colman becomes obsessed with Dakota Johnson and her young daughter.
5. The Adam Project
The Adam Project is a Sci-fi Adventure directed by Shawn Levy and stars the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. The Adam Project scores 6.7 on IMDB. An injured pilot is hiding in Adam Reed’s garage when the 12-year-old boy enters there one night while still grieving the tragic loss of his father the previous year. The pilot turns out to be Adam himself from the future. In order to return in time on a covert operation, he has risked everything. To locate their father, make things right, and rescue the planet, they must set out on a journey into the past together. Both the young and adult Adams are able to deal with their father’s passing and begin to repair the traumas that have scarred them.
6. The Hand of God
The Hand of God is a 2021 Italian Drama with a 7.3 IMDB rating. Take heed, the movie is slow and sorrowful, but also deep and thought-provoking. What really stands out is the incredible acting that makes even the most talented Hollywood actors seem like amateurs. Paolo Sorrentino’s film, set in Naples in the 1980s, follows reclusive 17-year-old Fabietto Schiesi (Filippo Scotti) as he tries to establish his own identity in relation to his lusty, humiliating, and loving family members. The majority of The Hand of God focuses on the tense connection Fabietto has with his parents, Saverio and Maria.
7. The Light Between Oceans
The Light Between Oceans is a 2016 drama directed by Derek Cianfrance and featuring Aussie movie star and producer Anthony Hayes and starring Michael Fassbender. It gets a worthy 7.2 on IMDB. Off the coast of Australia, a World War I veteran and his wife Isabel, a woman eager to have a child, run a lighthouse. She thinks her prayers have been heard when a baby in a boat is found ashore. Even though he thinks they should call the police, Tom ultimately agrees to Isabel’s request to keep the kid. Finally, fate steps in when the couple encounters the child’s biological mother on the mainland.
8. The Trial of the Chicago 7
The Trial of the Chicago 7 recounts the actual events of the defendants who were tried after the 1968 Democratic National Convention revolt in Chicago, United States. IMDB gives it a 7.8 rating.
9. Mank
In the showbiz themed Mank, the clever and drunken screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz reexamines 1930s Hollywood as he struggles to finish Citizen Kane. This movie is perfect if you enjoy movies premised around Hollywood during its golden era. Mank gets 7.3 on IMDB.
10. The Irishman
The Irishman is a 2019 gangster flick with a star-studded cast starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. A truck driver gets entangled with a crime family. The Scorsese film has a 7.9 IMDB rating and rightfully so.
