Wrong. You can start acting at any time. There are a lot of reasons why adults want to start acting. Some of them are incorrect reasons such as seeking fame, but other reasons include a love of the craft, wanting to build confidence, or simply having a desire to explore something new.

Whether you want to start mastering acting techniques to become the next star of stage and film, or simply want to join an amateur production group for something to do, learning how to act is plenty of fun. In fact, it’s probably more fun to learn acting as an adult than it is as a child.

In the following article, we will discuss some of the best tips for starting your acting journey.

Start with Some Study

Ouch! Acting is an art, and you may have thought it is all about expression and you don’t need to study like you would another subject. Sadly, that’s not true and like anything we learn, some hard work, research, and study are necessary. Don’t worry, acting is one of the best subjects to study for, simply because your research material is so much fun.

It’s good to start with at least a decent knowledge of the industry. So, pick up some books on the acting business, and try to understand how the whole system works. Yes, even peripheral areas like agents, marketing, and other aspects.

You should absolutely read books on acting craft, reading about techniques, styles, and schools of thought.

Put Fantasies in Last Place

Do you dream of lighting up the silver screen, or walking down the red carpet as you open your latest $100 million picture? Everyone dreams of that, even people who don’t want to learn acting. Goals are good and helpful, fantasies are not. Wanting to get cast in a play or TV show within 3 years is a worthy thing to aim for, moving to Hollywood before you have even had a lesson is probably not going to end well.

Don’t be afraid to start at the very bottom. Amateur production groups are a fantastic way to hone your skills and learn about the craft. That does not mean you should get stuck in a rut if you have more expansive goals. It just means you can temper your ambition by understanding that becoming an actor first is the most important step.

Get Lessons

Make no mistake, a lot of what separates bad actors from good ones and the good ones from the great ones, is talent. Acting is a creative art form and talent can take you a long way. If you have a natural flair for acting, you stand a better chance of achieving your goals than someone who finds the process a struggle.

That said, even the most naturally gifted actors should start out with lessons. More than teaching you how to act, lessons give you structure in your performance, provide deeper understanding of what you can achieve, and push you to explore more of yourself. Lessons are not about creating actors, they are about moulding them from the raw talent that already exists.
