Well, here’s a hell of a thing. Not long after we reported that Legendary Entertainment has scooped up the rights to Frank Herbert’s sprawling far-future saga, Dune, Variety is reporting that current cinematic golden boy Denis Villeneuve is in talks to helm the mooted big screen adaptation.
This is just about the best possible outcome for Dune as a screen property. You may quibble that it would be better served by a prestige cable series adaptation, but the trade-off here is that one of the most exciting and visually gifted filmmakers to come along in years is circling the project. Villenueve is a machine when it comes to striking imagery – if nothing else, his Dune will look incredible. Still, so did David Lynch’s so, you know, adjust your expectations accordingly.
That’s all the news out there at the moment, but we’ll be watching this one very closely.
