Generate Crew is delivering two industry-led crew Masterclasses in Western Australia before the end of the year, giving local crew the practical skills and systems that international studio productions expect.
The Masterclasses will be led by two of the most senior practitioners working on international productions in Australia. Production Manager Murray Alford (Boy Swallows Universe, Elvis) and Supervising Location Manager Lauren Cooper (Elvis, Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat) have held key roles on some of the largest studio productions ever filmed in this country, and both are currently working at that level.
“I’ve worked alongside Murray and Lauren many times, and I can tell you first-hand they are at the very top of their game. The way they run a production office and a locations department is the standard international studios expect, and that’s exactly what participants will learn. Because we come from crew ourselves, we know how rare it is to get that kind of access,” said Nerida Groth, Co-Founder of Generate Crew.
Founded in 2024 by Nerida Groth and Louise Hodgson, Generate Crew provides crew development and pastoral care to screen productions across Australia. Through placing dedicated Skills Development Officers on productions, they combine structured traineeships with ongoing crew support. This framework has been successfully integrated across productions, including Anaconda (Sony Pictures), The Mosquito Bowl (Netflix), Honeymoon with Harry (Amazon MGM), and Goalpost Pictures’ Black Snow and Stuck Up and Stupid.
Groth and Hodgson have worked through a decade of rapid growth in Australian screen production and see strong opportunities for Western Australia as its screen sector continues to expand.
“Government incentives are an important part of bringing productions and jobs to a state, and they also create a demand for skilled crew. Building the workforce alongside that growth is what makes the investment sustainable,” said Louise Hodgson, Co-Founder of Generate Crew.
Generate Crew will deliver a Production Office Masterclass on October 17th & 18th and a Supervising Location Manager’s Masterclass on November 14th & 15th. Head to their website for details www.generatecrew.com.au/masterclass
The workshops are delivered with the support of Screenwest and the Western Australian Government.
The Masterclasses are part of Generate Crew’s work building crew capability across the country, so local crew are ready for the jobs that incentives attract. Producers and production companies filming in Western Australia can contact Generate Crew to discuss Skills Development Officer support ahead of pre-production.
