There is a refreshing handcrafted sensibility to All That Glisters, the directorial debut of LA-based Aussie actor, Trilby Glover.
Drawn from her own experiences in LA, Glover’s ensemble comedy is centred around a dinner party hosted by Australian actor Cheryl (played by Glover).
Amidst the chaos of the party, several at the event begin to question what they really want in life, such as Angie (Jessica McNamee), who is losing interest in Tom (Adam Campbell), and makes a public confrontation about the matter. Anne (Jocelyn Towne), an experienced lawyer, comes to the conclusion that she hates her job and wants to quit. And there’s also the mystery of a missing friend that weighs over the party.
Much of the humour and enjoyable moments of All That Glisters come from the interplay and dynamics between characters. This aspect is one of the film’s biggest strengths.
These light moments that run throughout the film are complemented by Joaquin Sedillo’s handsome cinematography.
There is also a not-so thinly veiled satire of Hollywood lifestyles that feels eerily accurate. There is a recurring joke in the film where people turn up at Cheryl’s house looking for a bigger party down the street.
All That Glisters was clearly made with a small budget, yet it uses its limited means to its advantage and makes the most of its resources, resulting in an entertaining, light-hearted film that impresses with its visual polish.
