Tom Holland’s return as Spider-Man has delivered a record-breaking Australian opening weekend, with audiences turning out in extraordinary numbers for Columbia Pictures’ SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY.

The film grossed $30.4m over the four-day Thursday to Sunday opening weekend, shattering records.

This figure is:

  • The biggest opening weekend of 2026
  • The 2nd biggest opening weekend of all-time in Australia
  • The biggest opening weekend since 2019
  • The biggest opening weekend of a Spider-Man film
  • The biggest opening weekend outside of holidays

The film’s $30.4m opening weekend gross is second only to the $34.1m four-day opening of AVENGERS: ENDGAME in 2019 and above the $27.3m opening of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in 2015.

The film is a cultural juggernaut around the world this weekend, delivering an historic USD$927m worldwide opening including a USD$355m opening in the Domestic U.S market, where it is the #2 opening of all-time behind AVENGERS: ENDGAME. The film has been embraced by both critics and audiences globally, currently certified fresh with a 90% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 98% audience rating, the highest audience rating ever for a Spider-Man film.

In SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, Peter Parker is fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him. As he watches his old friends move on without him, the pressure sparks a change he may not have the power to control. But that transformation could also be the only thing standing between the city and a powerful new villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

Stephen Basil-Jones, Managing Director of Sony Pictures Releasing Australia said SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY has not only created brand new Box office records but underscores the fact that going to see movies at the cinema is well & truly back! It delivered the biggest Saturday ever at the cinemas, the biggest Sunday ever at the cinemas & the biggest opening in Sony Pictures long illustrious 100-year history. This is a win for everyone…fans and audiences of Spider-Man are just loving the film, the cinemas that are playing it & the industry at large which is making a big, bold announcement that cinema is back, stronger than ever.”
