Geez, another day, another director obsessed with Stanley Kubrick. Though Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s wild political satire comedy Digger looks more like Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up (or even Larry Charles’ Masked And Anonymous) than it does Dr. Strangelove. Tom Cruise is hamming it up to buggery, everyone has weird hair, and the latest from the Birdman director looks to be taking swings at just about everything (US politics, the environment, over-involved billionaires, cats, shovels), which means that this ambitious slab of demented Americana is either headed for film-of-the-year type status, or to an uncomfortable place alongside other shambolic satires like Catch-22 or Slaughterhouse Five. Considering the scope and obvious daring of this one, we hope desperately for the former…
