‘Salt in the Veins’ Documentary Premieres at Melbourne Documentary Film Festival
‘Salt in the Veins’ is a new documentary celebrating the power of lifelong passion and defying expectations. The film follows two brothers who have been surfing together for more than 50 years and continue to chase waves well into their later years. A heartfelt exploration of ageism and the transformative power of staying physically active, ‘Salt in the Veins’ highlights how personal passions and family connections can transcend societal expectations about ageing.
Through intimate storytelling, the documentary captures the brothers’ bond with each other and the sea, and the quiet determination that keeps them riding waves despite the rarity of anyone their age remaining so active in the ocean. ‘Salt in the Veins’ is both a tribute to resilience and a timely reminder that purpose, and vitality are not limited by age.
Director Emilie Lowe shared her inspiration for the film: “My dad has always been my hero. Seeing him and my uncle at 65 still surfing almost every day, despite the rarity of anyone their age staying this active in the ocean, filled me with inspiration. I decided that their story might inspire others and show that hobbies and passions are not defined by age.”
‘Salt in the Veins’ showcases the themes of determination, strength of will, and the vital importance of family connection in later life. The film invites audiences of all ages to reconsider assumptions about ageing and embrace continued adventure and fulfilment at any age.
