Cairns Crocodiles, presented by Pinterest, returns this May with an expanded agenda making room for its inaugural Film & Screen track.

As production costs continue to increase and traditional pathways tighten in western markets, filmmakers, production houses and industry leaders are increasingly looking to Asia as both a location solution and a commercial partner.

The new Film & Screen track is set to explore one of the most significant structural shifts in global screen productions, a pivot away from the US and Europe, and towards Asia. The track will touch on Asia turning into that of a centre for production efficiency, audience growth and co-creation, moving away from a traditionally US reliant structure.

It will examine this realignment through the lens of the industry data and shifting audience behaviour, positioning Australia at the centre of this industry intersection between the US and Asia.

The Data at the Center session will feature Ampere Analysis senior analyst, Ed Ludlow alongside Lonestar Entertainment Co founder and executive director, filmmaker and producer, Aaron Fa’aoso. The pair are set to bring together on-the-ground screen production insight and data intelligence to unpack where attention and commissioning dollars are moving worldwide.

Australian Production House founder and executive producer, Louise Schultze, said the region represents a massive opportunity, with Australia well positioned to take advantage  due to proximity and close industry relations:

“When you think about the size of the Chinese and Indian demographics, combined they are about the size of the whole teen market,” said Schultze.

“As the current highest cinema-going demographic is the 15-25 age group, we should be looking at all opportunities around brand and screen.

“If we start as a sector to seriously orient to these markets, we have not only very strong domestic demand, we have the capacity to export film and television shot and made here to massive sized markets in India and China.

“The Australian screen sector already has a lot of successful partnerships and productions with countries on the other side of the world, and we know that our Asian partners can deliver very high quality results.”

BrandMusiq founder & soundsmith, Rajeev Raja on the addition of a Film & Screen track at this year’s Cairns Crocodiles, presented by Pinterest, said: “This convergence creates a powerful synergy, one that I believe will unlock manifold opportunities to exponentially grow collaboration and innovation across the Australian and Asian markets – in screen and brands and marketing and beyond.”

The Film & Screen track is powered by Irresistible Magazine and was curated alongside a cross-sector advisory group spanning television, film, production, media and marketing.

Cairns Crocodiles, presented by Pinterest, is set to take place from Tuesday May 12 to Thursday May 14.
