Her Fight, His Name: The Story of Gwen Carr and Eric Garner, the powerful short documentary chronicling a mother’s decade-long fight for justice and reform after the death of her son, will have its Australian premiere at the 2025 Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.
The film will screen as part of Shorts Session 7 at Cinema Nova on Sunday, July 27 at 10:30AM.
Directed by Student Academy Award winner and BAFTA nominee Brad Bailey and produced by Emmy-nominated Jered Everson, the film offers an intimate portrait of Gwen Carr, whose son Eric Garner’s final words — “I can’t breathe”—became a global rallying cry. Ten years later, Gwen’s advocacy continues, reshaping how America and the world understand justice, accountability, and the strength of motherhood.
The team behind the film also includes Academy member and Oscar winner Doug Blush, acclaimed composer Jongnic Bontemps, producer and philanthropist Nancy Blachman, and journalist and commentator Francis Maxwell.
