Maybe someone has insulted your friend or endangered you, your family, or your lifestyle. Or maybe someone talked trash about your girlfriend, Sydney Sweeney, while you were around (we can dream). Whatever the cause, when diplomacy has failed, submission is not an option. Sometimes, when your pride—no, your life—depends on it, you have no other option than to face your foe, grit those teeth, and have a good ol’ scrap.

Movie showdowns are as ancient as movies themselves; two sworn foes face-to-face, once and for all, knowing there can be only one winner. Celebrating cinema’s love of the showdown, here is our selection of the finest.

Team Cap vs Team Iron Man: Captain America: Civil War

What’s better than a 1v1 showdown in cinema? Easy, when an entire team of superheroes fights against a fellow team of superheroes!

You may have already guessed the Avengers’ last confrontation in Captain America: Civil War would take first place, but that’s only because it truly deserves it. The spectacular array of characters and effects makes it seem like this fight is straight out of a comic book.

Instead of just having an all-star lineup for show, the Russo Brothers really give each character something to do, which makes the brawl that much more impressive. Every superhero has their moment to shine, from Spider-Man destroying Ant-Man like a bug on the bottom of his shoe, to Bucky Barnes facing up against a Black Panther driven by retribution.

Whether you’re on Team Cap or Team Iron Man, you’ll find something to love about this magnificent superhero fight because it’s so evenly matched.

007 vs. Le Chiffre: Casino Royale (2006)

We’re going ‘off the beaten track’ regarding typical showdowns for this one, but when you remove the fist-fighting for battle on the poker table between the hero and villain, nobody fits the role better than Bond.

There is no greater casino scene than James Bond’s poker showdown in Casino Royale. An intense and thrilling sequence occurs as Bond engages in a high-stakes poker game with the film’s antagonist, Le Chiffre.

The stunning Montenegrin Casino Royale serves as the backdrop, exuding an air of refined elegance. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and the film’s shocking turns and dramatic scenes raised the bar for Hollywood’s depictions of casinos, featuring the most intense gambling battle we’ve ever seen.

Just remember, if you’re going to replicate Bond and battle evil at the poker table, do it from a long distance with online casinos –to see the full page – and keep yourself away from the impending dangers.

Luke vs. Darth: The Empire Strikes Back

The showdown between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back is unparalleled in cinematic history.

“You are not a Jedi yet, but the Force is with you, young Skywalker,” a voice says as it breaks the stillness as Luke enters the carbon freeze chamber, which is darkened. He plods up the steps, pausing momentarily at the top to look at Vader, before confronting the owner of that voice. He draws and lights his saber, ready to meet the same terror he felt in the Dagobah cave. Fear, however, leads to the shadow side, so he presses on, hoping that things will be different this time. As if to hint at the inevitable conclusion of this confrontation, Vader then brandishes his own weapon and, using a one-handed grip, playsfully taunts Luke.

The action unfolds as they engage in combat among the enthralling orange-tinged smoke and darkness. The audience must watch in terror as their hero, Luke, is completely annihilated when Vader stops being so kind and starts to unleash himself fully. At first physically, and then psychologically, as the terrible truth is revealed to him by Vader!

Every time I watch this scene, it always gives me the willies.

Rocky vs. Ivan Drago: Rocky IV

Unbeatable odds, patriotism, corny songs, and a collection of old-school montages—this cinematic showdown epitomizes the moment when the Rocky series’ natural absurdity blossomed beautifully and has everything you could possibly desire from a confrontation.

Rocky has sworn retribution against Ivan Drago, the super-human Soviet wrecking machine, for killing his buddy and mentor Apollo Creed in a prior battle. Courageously, he has avoided the temptation to practice any real boxing while preparing for the battle, opting instead to play in the snow and cut logs. Well, it worked… (Lol)

All the battles in Rocky (and this one specifically) are wonderful because the fighters seem awful at boxing; to Rocky, ‘blocking’ for Rocky refers to something weighty you lift in training montages, and nothing more. Despite the distant realism from the actual sport, nothing is more epic than a final Rocky showdown, and Drago is undoubtedly his fiercest foe to date.

Drago and Clubber Lang are tied for the finest Rocky baddie, but their battle qualifies for the list because of its power to unify countries.

Neo vs. Agent Smith: The Matrix

The Matrix, which combines Eastern choreography with sci-fi to confident effect, is still a turning point in the history of action cinema.

Neo, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, has been deceived and now perceives the world as an oppressive delusion, created by a race of machines that employs humans as a renewable source of electricity. Agent Smith is the embodiment of this regime, a growling Hugo Weaving who discovers an unlikely adversary in Thomas Anderson, a computer hacking office worker.

While Agent Smith feels firm and immovable, the constantly creative choreography of this duel—the work of movie kung-fu expert Yuen Woo-ping—guarantees that every punch feels weighted and excruciating. Arguably the best battle of the whole trilogy, it represents the tipping point for Neo and Smith—the moment they see the balance of power has changed.

Ripley vs. Alien Queen: Aliens (1986)

Say no more when the Xenomorph queen attempts to harm the small girl you’ve been shielding. Upping the ante by introducing more challenging foes for our brave heroine, James Cameron’s probably better sequel to the sci-fi/horror epic succeeds. Just as Newt looks to be in danger, Ellen shows the wicked queen what she’s made of by crashing into her with a cargo loader and sending her tumbling into space.

This sequence in particular makes the film a watershed moment for female action actors; Sigourney Weaver was even nominated for an Oscar for her performance. These factors, together with the epic scenario’s undeniable quality, made it an easy choice for our top showdowns in movie history.
