The feature length adaptation of D. C. Fairhurst’s award winning short film This Town Ain’t Big Enough for the Both of Us, a nostalgically entertaining action comedy shot almost entirely with no dialogue and in black and white, has just wrapped production in Sydney, also announcing its impressive cast. Given the image that has been released with the announcement, it looks like the feature version, titled Pickpockets, will follow a similar stylistic route.
Starring the short film’s Fairhurst and Lucy Green, the impressive supporting cast includes Tim Minchin, Zoe Terakes, the ubiquitous Darren Gilshenan, Mia Morrisey, Danny Kim, Alfie Gledhill, Jason Perini, Marcus Johnson, and Matt Levett, who Associate Produced Fairhurst’s impressive debut feature Reaching Distance.
“The short ends on an emotional switcheroo,” said Fairhurst and Green, also co-writers on Pickpockets. “At both festivals and online, the overwhelming response from audiences was a demand to see more, to find out if the feud between Jesse and Robin could possibly turn romantic. So, it’s been one of the great pleasures of our careers to bring their spiky, combative partnership to the screen.”
“While Pickpockets owes a lot to the screwball romances of the ’30s and crime films of the ’70s, it has a lot to say about modern Australia,” added Fairhurst. “We hope the story of these two scrappy outcasts connects with a younger audience who also feel they’re trying to get ahead in a game that’s been rigged against them.”
