Number 5. 100% Wolf

Yes, that’s right, we kick off our list of the best Australian international films to watch on Netflix with a movie that will satisfy the entire family. 100% Wolf is an animated movie that follows the journey of a wolf pack that protects the local town. The key to the storyline is Freddy; he’s expected to take on the role of an alpha male but on coming of age, 13, rather than transform to the wolf he becomes a lovable poodle instead. Does the cuddly pooch have what it takes to keep everything on track? It’s worth keeping an eye out for Foxwell – played by Rhys Darby – and Batty; she’s voiced by Hugo Weaving’s niece, Samara.

Number 4. Danger Close

Here is a real change of pace as we move from an animated film to a war story; the latter is based on true events. Danger Close focuses on ‘The Battle of Long Tan’ that took place in Vietnam back in the sixties. The movie, which heavily features Vikings star Travis Fimmel, was well received in Australia with nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Original Music Score and winning the Best Sound award at the AACTA Awards. We don’t do spoilers but this war film dramatically unfolds with a not so bog-standard ending.

Number 3. A 2nd Chance

Actually, this film is one of two 2nd Chance movies available on Netflix. As is often the case though, the sequels rarely live up to the same standards. A 2nd Chance focuses on Maddy, an up and coming gymnast. Gymnastics might not be what you consider one of the main betting sports but across the 95 minutes of this film Maddy and her coach, Kate, who is played by Nina Pearce, have to defy the odds to make it to the top.

Number 2. Kath & Kimderella

Kath & Kimderella was released 10 years ago now as a spin-off from the Aussie sitcom Kath & Kim. The comedy duo is reunited in the early part of the film. Before long, they’re winning the trip of a lifetime to Italy. Once they’ve completed the flight, the fun really begins with comical twists and laugh out loud moments along the way. With big names such as Richard E Grant also featuring, it’s hard not to give it the 85 minutes it demands.

Number 1. The Nightingale

Coming top of our list of the best Australian international films to watch on Netflix is The Nightingale. The first-place ranking is not up for debate; it’s the best Aussie film on Netflix right now. The movie takes you back in time to 1825 as Aisling Franciosi – playing a character named Clare – is forced to put up with unwanted advances when serving time as a con. From there on out, the film becomes a story of violence, race and revenge with a strong plot and even stronger scenes. Unlike 100% Wolf, it is not one for the kids!
