The Mornington Peninsula’s Salty Project has completed principal photography and is now moving into post-production, including ADR, editing, colour grading, and musical composition. This innovative film initiative not only addresses the vital topic of youth mental health but also empowers local students with hands-on filmmaking experience, preparing them for future creative endeavours.
In recent months, students participated in workshops covering all aspects of filmmaking, from screenwriting and directing to cinematography and performance. Mentored by industry professionals, these students have gained real-world experience, assisting on set and shadowing key crew members. Post-production will see some students continuing their involvement, while others are already embarking on their own projects, equipped with newfound skills and confidence.
The film stars rising talent Hyu Motoki as “Lachlan,” with Mayla Dillon and Luca Faraci in supporting lead roles. Set against the stunning coastal backdrop of the Peninsula, Salty blends themes of surfing, Aussie beach culture, and young love while exploring deeper issues of racism and PTSD.
Writer and showrunner Melissa Zhen Zhu Riemer hails from Beaumaris where she is based when not living in Vancouver, Canada and pursuing a career in screenwriting.
Co-creator and producer Danielle Singleton hails from Frankston South, and has produced content for brands such as Disney, L’oreal, Kia, VicRoads, AGL, Australia Post, NAB, Bendigo Bank, HBF, Sunbeam, Praise and Driscolls to name a few.
The project has been supported generously by the local community, with contributions from businesses and private donors alike.
Beyond making a film, Salty represents a community-driven effort to inspire change, showcase diversity, and shine a light on important youth issues.
