AT IN CONVERSATION EVENT THIS THURSDAY

The work of Australia’s hottest new cinematographer Matthew Chuang ACS currently lights up some of the biggest names in cinema, including Olivia Colman (Jimpa) and Jason Momoa (Chief of War), and this Thursday Dec 18 Melbourne has a chance to hear from the acclaimed DOP as he receives the Screen Presence Trailblazer Award at an intimate in-conversation event.

From Cannes to Sundance to MIFF, Matthew has already earned global acclaim for his distinctive visual style, known for its emotional precision, bold visual language, and immersive naturalism.

Matthew’s diverse and extraordinary slate includes Apple TV+ Chief of War, co-created and starring Jason Momoa, Sophie Hyde’s Jimpa (Kismet, Feb 19) starring Olivia Colman, Justin Chon’s Blue Bayou (Cannes 2021) starring Alicia Vikander, and Goran Stolevski’s You Won’t Be Alone (Sundance 2022) and Of An Age (MIFF Opening Night 2022).

Screen Presence is delighted to present an in-depth conversation with Matthew Chuang ACS, hosted by camera operator Jeon Patton at the Chinese Museum on Thursday 18 December, where they’ll unpack the emotional visual language behind these projects, the creative and practical realities of collaboration, and the risks and rewards of pursuing bold, distinctive cinema.

Founded by renowned producer Lisa Wang, Screen Presence is a thriving screen initiative championing Asian-Australian creatives, both in front and behind the camera, with tangible results. The in-conversation event is the latest of a series of hugely successful sellout events in 2025, and will see Matthew awarded with the Trailblazer Award, following in the footsteps of the inaugural winner Corrie Chen in 2024.

A must-attend evening for emerging and established filmmakers, cinematographers, producers, and anyone passionate about craft and collaboration in contemporary cinema.
