Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to unveil to the world what his Deadpool 2 co-star, Josh Brolin, looks like as Cable, the time-travelling mercenary messiah finally making his X-Universe big screen debut in the upcoming sequel. Lo!

Then Deadpool and Cable co-creator, “artist” Robe Liefeld, got in the action, giving as a photo that looks better than any Liefeld drawing ever (sorry Rob, but you know it’s true):

That’s pretty bad ass.

For those not down with the convoluted continuity of the X-Men comics universe, Cable was introduced in the pages of The New Mutants (soon to be getting their own movie)  late in their run, acting as a kind of sociopathic drill instructor for the teen team. Cable was a mutant himself, but his powers weren’t the focus so much as the huge collection of guns he liked to employ, because it was the ’90s and everything was terrible. Cable turned out to be the son of X-Men leader Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey (see, it’s just nuts), raised in the far future by a kind of matriarchal religious cult and sent back in time, Terminator-style, to save the world.

Kind of. It was really convoluted and Cable was basically an awful male power fantasy character, but was greatly redeemed when the folks at Marvel realised that teaming such a grim, self-serious goon with the Merc with a Mouth was an opportunity for comedy gold. So there ya have it.

Deadpool 2 is due out in 2018.
