Nolan’s latest film – after his polarising 2020’s sci-fi mind-bender Tenet – sees him return to the real world setting of World War II.
The film follows ‘the father of the atomic bomb’ J. Robert Oppenheimer as he works on The Manhattan Project, a scientific endeavour that would yield the world’s deadliest weapon.
Oppenheimer looks to be the antithesis of Nolan’s visceral, triptych battle picture Dunkirk, and more of a cerebral exploration of the ethical considerations of warfare.
Playing the titular Oppenheimer is long-term Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy, marking his first lead in a Nolan production. Surrounding Murphy is Nolan’s strongest ensemble yet, with Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Gary Oldman, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh just being a few of the star-studded cast.
Always the innovator, Nolan is once again utilising his favoured IMAX format and has allegedly recreated a nuclear explosion – without CGI.
