In an Australian exclusive, FilmInk is thrilled to present the Official Trailer for the 2021 Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival.

The dazzling montage of images has been compiled by Richard de Carvalho of Lunacraft Productions, synced to the track ‘Beyond The Storm’ by composer Jayden Lawrence. Motion graphics have been supplied by LA-based artist, Ryan Stubbs.

“We are only two years into the life of the Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival, so to be able to draw upon such incredible talent in the service of what we do is a tremendous honour,” said Simon Foster, Festival Director. “It barely scratches the surface in terms of the films we have programmed this year, yet it somehow captures the scale and scope and ambition of the festival perfectly.”

All the footage comes from the 2021 festival line-up, with films glimpsed in the trailer lifted from such works as UK director Harry Boast’s intergalactic adventure KIRKE DE VILLE; The Matrix-like hitman thriller ANNULAR ECLIPSE, from Chinese auteur Zhang Chi; Spanish filmmaker Jorge Corpi’s battling robots epic, ELLIPSIS; and, Canadian Edward J. Douglas’ Tinder-of-tomorrow romp, SWIPED.

The 2021 Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival unfolds as that new festival beast – a ‘hybrid event’. From November 4-25, a massive roster of 20 features and 70+ short films will blast out across Australia via the US streaming service Xerb.TV, with ticket packages offering sessions from as low as $6.50.

In the midst of the online event will be the traditional live festival, unfolding from November 11-14 and returning this year to the state-of-the-art auditorium at Actors Centre Australia in Leichhardt. The Opening Night film is Carlson Young’s THE BLAZING WORLD, a 2021 Sundance Film Festival selection that has drawn comparisons to such cult hits as Donnie Darko, Mandy and Pan’s Labyrinth.

Other films in the line-up include GLASSHOUSE, South African director Kelsey Egan’s lockdown-themed riff on The Beguiled; Beniamino Catena’s soul-transference drama, VERA DE VERDAD, a Chilean/Italian co-production; Eddie Arya’s RISEN, a Villeneuve-esque alien invasion epic, shot in Sydney and the US; and, to close out the festival, Australian director Samuel Gay’s giddy rom-com/fantasy, A GUIDE TO DATING AT THE END OF THE WORLD.

A Guide to Dating at the End of the World

“The back-end of the filmgoing year is usually packed with genre festival choices, but our friends in the sector weathered a lot of punches in 2021,” says Foster, whose festival is the only physical event left standing after Sydney Underground Film Festival and A Night of Horror Film Festival went online and Monster Fest cancelled its capital city roadshows entirely. “We hope our community comes out in support of our efforts to stay upright and the program we’ve sourced from all corners of the globe. If we can achieve half the promise that Richard’s trailer captures, the 2021 Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival will be an incredible experience.”
