If the rumour turns out to be true, we would be seeing a younger version of Bruce Wayne; an indication that someone other than Ben Affleck would be playing the Dark Knight. Reports of Affleck having left the project have been making their way around the internet for more than a year, so it wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world. We do now, however, have a ‘confirmed’ report that the Jason Todd rumour was merely fake news.
Todd references
The Jason Todd storyline would have made an intriguing tale for The Batman, and could have shown us another side to the flamboyant Bruce Wayne. Todd’s suit recently made an appearance in Batman vs Superman, which didn’t go unnoticed by fans. There was also a reference made in Suicide Squad, in a reveal that Harley Quinn assisted the Joker in killing Robin. The Jason Todd/Robin story was already well-known in the DCEU, so it all sounded plausible. Further, Matt Reeves has previously indicated that he intends for his Batman movie to be a very emotional one, which gives more substance to the rumour.
In the meantime…
Batman fans will have some time to wait until the movie is released to theatres. Of course, in the meantime, they can always catch up with Affleck’s performances in Batman vs Superman and Justice League on Blu-ray. The Caped Crusader will also appear in the animated film, The Death of Superman & Reign of the Supermen, set to be released in late 2018. If movies aren’t enough, there are also numerous video games to keep fans happy, such as Arkham Origins, The Enemy Within, and The Dark Knight Progressive Slot. The latter, among the more popular movie themed online slots, includes scenes from the movie, along with 243 ways to win real money. Of course, there are also the comic books themselves, including the one with the famed Jason Todd storyline, if fans can track it down.
More source material
Fans have been waiting to see the Jason Todd/Robin story on the big screen for some time. The rumour indicated we would see how both Batman and Bruce Wayne would handle his death. It’s been said that A Death in the Family was not the only source material, however, and that it may only be alluded to in the new movie. Some fans would be appeased at just a tease of Jason Todd’s story.
Shot down in flames
Unfortunately for fans, an insider recently told The Wrap that the rumour about the storyline was in no way true. This movie has experienced nothing but problems from the outset, however, so who knows what will and won’t happen. DC Films and Warner Bros. may not even know how it will turn out.
The film will likely go into production in 2019, which means that a release would be likely for the following year. Concerning Ben Affleck’s involvement, it appears that that’s still very much in the air.
