And now here’s the trailer for the decidedly discomfiting documentary, Hotel Coolgardie, which hits select cinemas across Australia from June 15.

The film follows two female Finnish backpackers who take jobs tending bar in the remote Western Australian mining town of Coolgardie, only to find themselves surrounded by thirst AF (in every possible sense) miners in what is basically a hyper-rapey real life take on Wake in Fright with less two-up and more blatant misogyny.

Directed, shot and edited by Western Australian filmmaker Pete Gleeson, Hotel Coolgardie is described as “…a sometimes amusing, sometimes appalling, surprisingly moving portrait of small town insularity, fragile masculinity and the plight of the outsider forced to adapt or face the consequences.” It has been selected for Hot Docs, American Documentary Film Festival, Nordic International Film Festival, New Zealand International Film Festival, CinéfestOz, and Canberra International Film Festival.
