It’s genuinely surprising that HBO’s Westworld came up with bupkis at the SAGs, with even MVP Thandie Newton losing out. She did lose to Claire Foy for The Crown, though, so maybe that’s okay. The Crown‘s John Lithgow also picked up a win for his sterling work as Churchill.
Elsewhere, it’s a fairly diverse slate. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis both won for Fences, while Bryan Cranston needs to clear off more shelf space thanks to his turn as LBJ for HBO. Indeed, it was a good year to play world leaders: between Lithgow’s Churchill, Hoy’s QE11, Cranston’s LBJ and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ fictional but formidable Selena Myer, playing a statesperson seemed to be the winning ticket this year.
And hey, at least the Stranger Things cast got a nod.
