Darwin International Film Festival (DIFF) Calls for Short Film Submissions from South East Asia and Australia

Darwin International Film Festival Calls for Short Film Submissions
Festival Dates: 11–21 September 2025
Submission Deadline: 21 June 2025

Darwin International Film Festival (DIFF) is an 11-day annual festival of film and film-related events occurring in mid-late September. It was founded in 2010 by the Darwin Film Society (DFS), a not-for-profit community organisation committed to promoting film culture in the NT. DFS continues to operate DIFF, as well as independent outdoor cinema, Deckchair Cinema (est. 1994).

Festival concept “Creating cultural exchange through the best of international film”

The concept for DIFF “Creating cultural exchange through the best of international film” embraces the international nature of the festival and the multicultural character of the Northern Territory. The theme focuses on the role of film as a medium to cross geographic and cultural barriers. DIFF aims to showcase a range of films from all continents, with a focus on our neighbours in south-east Asia, whilst using the Northern Territory as a unique setting for this cultural exchange.

The Darwin International Film Festival (DIFF) is calling for submissions for its 2025 short film programme. Celebrating cinematic storytelling, DIFF invites filmmakers from across Australia and South East Asia to submit their short films for consideration.

This year’s competition categories include:

  • Short – Australia
  • Short – Northern Australia
  • Short – South East Asia

We are looking for compelling, original works that showcase bold storytelling, diverse voices, and strong visual style. The selected films will be screened at DIFF 2025, running from 11 to 21 September.

Important Information:

  • All submissions must be made via FilmFreeway.
  • The final deadline for entries is 21 June 2025.
  • Films must be short format.
  • Eligible films must have been completed after July 2024.

DIFF offers filmmakers the chance to connect with audiences, industry professionals, and fellow creatives in a uniquely tropical setting. With a focus on regional storytelling and cross-cultural exchange, DIFF 2025 promises to be an inspiring celebration of short film talent.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a festival at the edge of Australia and the heart of Southeast Asia.
