The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has released the nominees for this year’s Golden Globe Awards, bringing with it the usual counter-intuitive mix of the utterly predictable and the odd surprise snub.
Those snubs become less surprising when you realise that the HFPA is a very, shall we say, “old school” organisation, even more moribund than the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. While the Academy is trying to tack with the winds of change when it comes to representation and diversity, the HFPA is less responsive to modern cultural trends as a whole. Hence, little love for Jordan Peele’s magisterial horror movie, Get Out (that Best Muscial or Comedy nom is baffling) and, disappointingly, no Best Director nomination for Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird.
Given there are 10 feature nominees across the Drama and Comedy/Musical categories and only five for Feature Director, there’s always going to be some heartbreak in that area, and Lady Bird did get some Best Screenplay and Best Picture – Comedy or Musical love, but we’re still left with a pretty blokey directorial field: Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Guillermo Del Toro, Martin McDonagh, and Christopher Nolan. Of the five, only genre vet GDT is anything even remotely resembling a left field choice.
Scott’s nom for All the Money in the World is a bit of a turn up, but not as much as Christopher Plummer’s nod for best supporting actor, considering he only shot his part weeks ago when called in to replace disgraced original cast member Kevin Spacey. It’s too late to re-shoot Genius, of course, which means the Geoffrey Rush, currently mired in his own scandal has picked up a Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television nomination, which is sure to generate a fair few think-pieces in the lead up to the awards night.
Sticking with local talent, Hugh Jackman’s upcoming musical extravaganza The Greatest Showman has handily collected three nominations, which is pretty impressive considering hardly anyone’s seen it. We’re sure it’s delightful.
