A Troubled Trekkie Takes to the Road in the Please Stand By Trailer

December 6, 2017
An autistic woman uses Vulcan logic to navigate an irrational world.

The upcoming dramedy Please Stand By sees Dakota Fanning as Wendy, an autistic Star Trek fan who absconds from a group home to try and get her whopping 500 page fan script to Los Angeles to enter it into a writing competition.

Written by Michael Golamco and based on his own play, Please Stand By is directed by veteran Australian filmmaker Ben Lewin whose next film, The Catcher Was a Spy, is premiering at Sundance next year. Co-starring Toni Collette, Alice Eve, Patton Oswalt, and Jessica Rothe, it looks like a tragicomic examination of the importance fandom can have for the marginalised, giving them agency and a sense of acceptance in a mean world. Check out the scene where Oswalt’s amiable cop talks Wendy down in Klingon – that’s beautiful.

Please Stand By is getting a US release on January 26, 2018 – hopefully Australia will be getting it sometime around then, too.
