Summer 1993 Looks Like Spain’s Answer to The Florida Project

July 17, 2018
Spain's official selection for the 2018 Academy Awards is coming to Australian cinemas.

The location and language may be very different, but we are very much getting a vibe from Summer 1993 that’s remarkably similar to what we got from last year’s sublime The Florida Project. Let’s see if the official synopsis sheds any light on the scenario…

“Spain’s official submission for this year’s Academy Awards and winner of the Best First Feature award at the Berlin Film Festival, Carla Simón’s extraordinary film, based on the events of her own upbringing, is one of the most evocative and affecting depictions of childhood seen in years. In the summer of 1993, following the death of her parents, six-year-old Frida (Laia Artigas) is sent from bustling Barcelona to the Catalan provinces to live with her aunt (Bruna Cusí) and uncle (David Verdaguer). The couple’s own daughter Anna (Paula Robles) welcomes her new sister with open arms, but Frida has a hard time coping with her emotions, and the source of her parents’ passing casts a shadow over how Frida is treated by the local community.”

Ah, yes. Might want to keep the tissues handy for this one.

Summer 1993 is out on limited release from August 2, 2018, through Palace Films
