It really is a time for angry, brilliant African American cinema, isn’t it? Get Out, BlacKkKlansman, everything Ryan Coogler’s ever done… and now Sorry to Bother You, which looks like a perfect potpourri if straight up hilarity, savage social commentary, and PKD-esque weirdness. Let’s go to the synopsis:
“In a dystopian not-too-distant future, black telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success and is propelled into a macabre universe.”
Hmm… not much to go by there, and perhaps that’s for the best – the consensus is that Sorry to bother you is nigh-indescribable, with one pundit calling it “weaponized hilarity” and another describing it as “the WTF movie of the year.”
What we do know for certain is that it’s the feature directing debut of rapper-turned-filmmaker Boots Riley, it features an incredible ensemble cast that includes Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Danny Glover, Steven Yeun, and Armie Hammer, and it’s currently sitting on 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hopefully we’ll get wind of an Australian release date soon. Fingers crossed, team.
