Setting Sun Film Festival is calling for entries
Last year’s festival sold out all sessions and received close to 80 short films from overseas and from Melbourne’s top filmmakers.
Since the first festival began in 2014, the Setting Sun has been the largest short film festival in the West and in 2018 it will also screen feature length film(s) for the first time. A lucky filmmaker will win the chance to premiere their film at the Sun Theatre.
The festival screens a number of diverse programs over five days and includes a competition to give Awards in a range of areas including animation, short feature, short doco, comedy, acting, direction, screenwriting and more. The Awards are presented on Opening Night, when everyone dresses up, walks the red carpet, drinks bubbly, and watches the winning films at the gorgeous art deco Sun Theatre.
“Maribyrnong Council is proud to be supporting the Setting Sun Short Film Festival for a fifth year running through our Festival City program. Our City is home to a large and dynamic creative community, so it’s fantastic that we have events like this that not only support emerging talent, but also provide a platform for showcasing it to the wider community to appreciate and enjoy,” said Mayor of Maribyrnong, Cr. Cuc Lam.
All competition categories are Open and the accepted length of short films that can be entered is 12 minutes.
“The festival enjoys a lot of support and it is great to see it growing and thriving every year.” Anna Bourozikas, Festival Director.
Festival Partner Victoria University will again sponsor the Best Secondary Student Film Award and offer the Top Ten secondary school filmmakers a specialist film masterclass developed by their Screen Media Department.
Award winning film producer and Women in Film and Television (Vic) Patron, Sue Maslin, is sponsoring the Female Only Rouge program for the third year and will donate a $1000 to the best film directed by a female filmmaker.
There are plenty of other great prizes including cash and film craft prizes, donated by Kindred Studios, Loop Project and Space Bar, Baby Guerilla, MADMAN Entertainment, Sun Theatre and more.
This year’s outdoor festival program will screen outside the Sun Theatre during summer.
