In a press conference overnight, the enigmatic Reflections in the Dust has been announced to screen at the 22nd Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
Following his scathing criticism of Screen Australia in a recent interview, where he said ‘they (Screen Australia) couldn’t care less about diversity, discovering new talent or progressing the artform’, 23-year-old director Luke Sullivan will see his film fittingly included in the ‘Rebels with a Cause’ special competition at the festival, which is said to ‘showcase films that push the boundaries of sound and image, reaching new limits in the art of storytelling’.
Reflections in the Dust is an emotionally brutal hybrid of documentary and fiction that follows the plight of blind girl (Sarah Houbolt) struggling to survive in a desolate swamp with her father – a paranoid schizophrenic clown (Robin Royce Queere). It has been called a confronting, poignant and timely exploration of toxic masculinity in Australia.
The film world premiered at the 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and had its Australian premiere at the 5th Sydney SciFi Film Festival, where Robin Royce Queere took out Best Actor.
The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (POFF) is the largest film festival in Northern Europe and the biggest annual cultural event in Estonia. It is expected to be attended by over 80,000 people this year.
