NINE NETWORK TO AIR DEBUT FEATURE MOCKUMENTARY FROM AUSSIE FILMMAKER THIS SUMMER!
Head Above Water is the debut feature film for Aussie writer/director Connor Fairclough, who after graduating from Sydney’s prestigious AFTRS last year, at just 19 years old, enjoyed almost immediate success when a number of his short films garnered lots of attention, critical praise and a slew of awards including “Most Creative Entry” and “Most Commercial Appeal” awards at IFF 2014 and “Judges Choice: Most Innovative Film” at the F.O.A International Film Festival 2015.
Fairclough is thrilled that Head Above Water will be getting a TV premiere on the Nine Network’s 9GO! Channel. Of the announcement Fariclough says;
“I’m so excited we’ve been given a chance by Nine to broadcast our film! After more than a year of hard work with an excellent team by my side, it is great to know the film is getting the chance to reach Aussie audiences.”
In a digital age where fame and popularity seem to be less tied to talent or achievement than to the number of likes and followers one has on social media, 2 young, professional surfers, Benji Halt (Elliot Loney) and Ricky Scrotun (Neel Kolhatkar) find themselves and their rivalry catapulted to crazy new heights following an incident caught on camera at a surf competition. Head Above Water is a fun and subtly scathing mockumentary film that highlights the see-sawing fortunes found in the shallow fame offered by social media notoriety. The classic 15 minutes of fame from nobody to idolisation to hatred in the blink of an emoji.
The stand-out, break-out stars of this film are undeniably the young comedians Elliot Loney and Neel Kolhatkar who play the rival surfers Benji Halt and Ricky Scrotun. Both young men have not only paid their dues on the stand-up circuits (often with notable wins and accolades) but have themselves tasted online stardom via Youtube videos with views numbering the millions! Loney is most well-known for his impression of Bear Grylls in a video created by Loney called Man vs Metro 1 as well as Channel 9’s Today Show Facebook Page video where his parody of tennis star Rafael Nadal went viral and hit over 10 million views. Kolhatkar’s Youtube and Facebook videos have gained tens of millions of hits over the few years he has been producing them, one video in particular, Educayshun, in 2015, amassed close to 5 million views alone. Fairclough admits he was a fan of both comedians before the conception of Head Above Water and knew he wanted to cast them both – Loney and Kolhatkar jumped at the chance to take on this fantastic opportunity.
Head Above Water is a true, Aussie comedy that also highlights some important and serious aspects of our culture in the irrepressibly tongue-in-cheek fashion that has come to endear Australian films to all the world. Head Above Water will be one of the unmissable TV events of the summer!
