MGM ACQUIRES FEATURE FILM RIGHTS TO CHILDREN’S ANIMATED SERIES ‘BEAT BUGS’
Wakely’s company is Grace: A Storytelling Company.
His most recent work, Motown Magic, based on the illustrious Motown catalogue of classic songs, is currently seen on Netflix in more than 190 countries. Beat Bugs earned Wakely an Emmy Award for writing in 2017.
Wakely has secured the rights to Bob Dylan’s singular catalogue of songs and is currently in development on an episodic drama based on those songs and the iconic characters found within them, and is currently in development on an array of music-centric projects: 27 is a series that blends fact with narrative storytelling to explore the strange phenomenon of iconic artists and entertainers who have tragically died at the age of 27; Melody Island is a children’s series which engages preschoolers through some of the world’s most iconic music, teaching them valuable life lessons in fun-filled episodes which combine live action, animation, song, dance, and craft; Mixtape is a series that focuses on season-long arcs based on couples who have forged their relationships through songs that have become the soundtrack to their journeys through life.
Beat Bugs is an animated television series on Netflix that revolves around the lives and adventures of five charming and funny childlike bugs who live in an overgrown American-style backyard.
Wakely will write and produce the feature film screenplay based on his hit animated show.
Beat Bugs featured some of the most well-known Beatles songs woven into the narrative of each episode. New versions of these classics have been exclusively recorded for the series by a diverse array of superstar artists, including P!nk, Sia, Eddie Vedder and Rod Stewart.
Jonathan Glickman, President, Motion Picture Group, MGM, Cassidy Lange, Co-President, Production, MGM and Tabitha Shick, Vice President, Production, MGM are overseeing the project on behalf of the studio.
Beat Bugs has won and been nominated for numerous awards including 10 Daytime Emmy Awards which resulted in two wins including Outstanding Writing for Wakely.
The first three seasons of Beat Bugs, as well as a special episode released in November, are seen on Netflix in more than 190 countries.
