MAIRI CAMERON TO SHADOW DIRECT AN EPISODE OF HARROW FOR HOODLUM
Queensland-based director Mairi Cameron released her first feature film THE SECOND in 2018 in cinemas nationally and on streaming platform Stan. THE SECOND was nominated for an AACTA for Best Indie Film and was one of eight feature films nominated for Best Australian Film at SPAA. Mairi’s career spans over a decade of directing short films, music videos and television commercials. Her short film MILK was selected for official competition at Cannes, won prizes at Palm Springs and Bilbao and was pre-selected for an Academy Award. She’s directed clips for some of Australiaʼs premier music artists, including Washingtonʼs SUNDAY BEST which won Triple Jʼs ʻMusic Video of the Yearʼ. She has a slate of long-form projects in development including an adaptation of American novel THE SECRET LIVES OF DRESSES.
The Shadow Directing program was created by the ADG with funding from Screen Australia’s Gender Matters: Brilliant Careers initiative. The initiative which was launched in 2016 focused on getting more women directing Australian TV drama and comedy series and serials and is still having an impact now.
Harrow is now filming its second 10×1 hour season in Brisbane and throughout Queensland. ABC Australia is the domestic broadcaster. The series was the first drama production for the Disney-owned ABC Studios International and Disney Media Distribution will license international rights. Harrow is supported by Screen Queensland. The first series is currently screening on Hulu in the US and UKTV in the UK.
“I’m grateful to both the ADG and Hoodlum for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity to try my hand at television directing, especially on such a brilliantly entertaining show as Harrow, which is not only produced in my home town of Brisbane, but really features the city as a character in its own right. Most of all though, I’m excited to be working with the formidable and inspiring Geoff Bennett as my mentor” said Mairi Cameron.
“We are delighted that we will have one of our talented new directors working on this long running drama. The ADG thanks Hoodlum for their ongoing support of new directors and for giving Mairi this unique opportunity,” said Kingston Anderson, CEO of the Australian Directors’ Guild.
‘Mairi is an outstanding Queensland talent and we are delighted to support this next step in her career and welcome her aboard the Harrow team’ Nathan Mayfield and Tracey Robertson, Executive Producers, Hoodlum.
Directors who have completed the program include LUCY GAFFY, LISA MATTHEW, DARLENE JOHNSON, JANE EAKIN and REBECCA O’BRIEN.
