HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE Box Office Success
The hit indie film, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE continues its rise from the incredible success in the New Zealand wilderness, to the top of the Australian box office charts and straight into the hearts of audiences across the country.
Only three weeks into release the film has earned $4,755,221 at the box office, with a screen average of $10,389, and is ranked at #5 in charts. It is the only film in the current Top 10 chart that has seen an increase in results week on week.
“I’m stoked with the response the film has received in Australia.” said director Taika Waititi (Boy, What We Do In The Shadows and upcoming Thor: Ragnorak) “There’s so much love and support out there for this film – we’re seeing whole families go to the cinema again and again. It makes me proud and I hope that, in time, Hunt for the Wilderpeople will be claimed by Australia as one of its own. Like Phar Lap and Russ.”
The hilarious new film, which stars Julian Dennison (Paper Planes) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, The Daughter) as an odd couple on the run in the New Zealand wilderness, has proven to be a box office success among audiences of all ages.
Neill, who is currently in Australia, said “Surprise! Australians seem to be embracing the film as well – ‘endearing’ is the word I get most here. Grown ups, kids, relics like me. A 20-something woman came up to me at lunch the other day and said ‘That’s the best date movie ever ‘ Go figure.” Speaking from Wellington, New Zealand, Dennison described the success as “skux.”
Now entering its fourth week, figures are expected to continue to rise in the lead up to school holidays and with the expansion of locations screening the film, from 111 to 166 screens.
The results echo the consistent positive sentiment and word of mouth around the film since the initial screenings at Sundance Film Festival this year, where it was received a standing ovation and rave reviews, followed by its local release in New Zealand, where it continues to break box office records.
It is currently the highest grossing NZ film of all time in NZ (currently at $11,309,614), and holds the record for the highest opening weekend and the highest single grossing day for a local film. Still sitting at #4 in the charts, it is currently on it’s way to breaking into the top five highest grossing films of all time in NZ, with approximately 1 in 9 people having seen the film.
Next up, the Wilderpeople will take on USA and Canada on 24th June and the UK on 12th August.
