It's not all Kurosawa and Ozu over there...

Famed Japanese film studio Nikkatsu have marked the 45th anniversary of the infamous ’Roman Porno’ by reviving their storied division. Part arthouse, part softcore pornography, this division of Nikkatsu thrived during the 1970s and ’80s, presenting to Japanese audiences the most groundbreaking cinema of the era.

With almost complete creative freedom, as long as they met the rules: the film had to be shot in a week, be sub-80 mins and have a sex scene every ten minutes.

In an attempt to launch the Roman Porno New Wave, five Japanese filmmakers have been selected to make a film for the series, each with a different theme.  Akihiko Shiota’s Wet Woman in the Wind represents the first wave of this revived studio.

Wet Woman in the Wind follows dissipated Tokyo playwright Kosuke (Tasuku Nagaoka), who has retreated to the countryside after deciding that he’s done with women, but the indefatigable cat-in-heat Shiori (Yuki Mamiya) has other ideas, clinging to Kosuke like his shadow. Akihiko Shiota has made a free-associative sex comedy that includes a burlesqued threesome and a coupling that literally brings down the house.

This hysterical slapstick comedy reboots Roman Porno to celebrate Nikkatsu’s 45th anniversary, paying sincere tribute to its forebears.

In cinemas July 12, 2018.
