The New Mission: Impossible Trailer Confirms 2018’s Franchises are 100% Renner-Free

Wherefore art thou, Jeremy?

First there was no Hawkguy in Avengers: Infinity War, and now the latest trailer for Mission: Impossible – Fallout shows that the series has jettisoned William Brandt, the IMF agent played by Jeremy Renner in Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation. It seems that Renner and movies with colons in the title are no longer simpatico. Drag.

Still, let’s accentuate the positive: the Cruiser is back, and he gets to once more pit his tiny frame against dizzying heights in service to humanity. Also back in the game: Ving Rhames’ hacker and Simon Pegg’s, er, other hacker, and there’s definitely a glimpse of Michelle Monaghan in the mix, making Cruise’s Ethan Hawke one of the few monogamous big screen spies in the history of the espionage genre – although surely he must be tempted by Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust, making a second appearance in the franchise.

New to the scene is Henry Cavill’s mustachioed CIA agent, taking the position of antagonist in a plot described thusly:

“The best intentions often come back to haunt you.  Mission: Impossible: Fallout finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong.  Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.”

Boy, that is really light on detail. Still, we can rest assured that this is, more likely than not, gonna be good fun. Cruise learned to fly a helicopter for this thing, you guys!

Mission: Impossible – Fallout is in cinemas from August 2.
