Aaron Sorkin has well and truly earned his reputation as one of the best film and TV writers of the last 30 years or so. what with A Few Good Men, Moneyball, The Social Network, The West Wing, etc. and so forth. Now it looks he’s got the directorial chops to go with his literary skills, if the trailer for Molly’s Game is anything to go by.
Jessica Chastain is Molly Bloom, Olympic-class skier turned poker room entrepreneur, who runs a weekly high stakes poker game for the great and the good (and the just plain stupidly rich) including, according to that Vanity Fair extract, “Leo, Ben, and Tobey”. Idris Elba is her attorney, brought in when, inevitably, the wheels come off her lucrative operation and the law gets involved. Kevin Costner, Chris O’Dowd, and Michael Cera round out the rest of the main ensemble.
So what can we expect here? Sorkin’s trademark deft and dapper dialogue, for sure, and a strong performance from Chastain as a young woman carving out her own place in the testosterone-fueled subculture of high stakes poker, with all the glamour and tension that world entails. Looks like a winning hand to us.
Molly’s Game is in cinemas from November 23, 2017.
