Set in a Melbourne fresh food market – “…a world where businesses are still family-run and bargains are bellowed in at least three different languages…” Fresh! looks at the pleasures and pitfalls of multiculturalism as it follows a diverse ensemble of characters as they bounce off each other in one of Australia’s traditional migrant milieus.
Created and written by Nikki Tran, who also produces with Simon Trevorrow, Fresh! was filmed at local markets operating across Melbourne, including Footscray, Preston and Dandenong markets.
“Footscray Market was integral to how my family connected to the wider community,” Tran observes. “As a child of parents who were once refugees, it’s important for me to create something that honours the experiences and stories of migrants in Australia, but not romanticise them.”
Starring Maia Absberg, Tony Ting, Rosa Nix, Shrut Palmar, Pauline Grace, Olivia Choi, Kevin Summers, Nyawuda Chuol, and Adam Hetherington, all six episodes of Fresh! are available from today. Check out episode one here:
