Like What We Do in the Shadows? Strap in for Wellington Paranormal

Taika and Jemaine's mockumentary series gets a short but fun trailer.

You’d have to be a particularly joyless CHUD not to get off on the comedic stylings of messrs of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. The two have been working together for yonks now (Waititi directed a ton of Flight of the Conchords), but their shared sensibilities are best expressed by the 2014 horror comedy What We Do in the Shadows, which saw the pair playing vampire flatmates living in Wellington, New Zealand.

That little movie has quietly spawned a franchise, with a sequel – We’re Wolves – in the works, along with a US television remake and, just around the corner, the NZTV spin off Wellington Paranormal, which is essentially Cops meets The X-Files but funny (rather like the sadly short lived US series, Death Valley).

Or, more specifically, “Sergeant Ruawai Maaka of the Wellington Police enlists the aid of Officers Minogue and O’Leary to tackle paranormal events in New Zealand’s capital city. In a police reality show style, the 6 part series follows these kiwi cops as they investigate cases such as the demon possession of a teenager, a noise complaint at a haunted house and a blood bank robbery.”

Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary are reprising their roles from What We Do in the Shadows. Does that mean we might get some notable cameos carrying over from the original film? Here’s hoping.

Wellington Paranormal hits the Kiwi airwaves on July 11. An Australian release is unconfirmed at this point, but this one’s a bit of a no-brainer – somebody will pony up for the local rights pretty sharpish.
