Jonah Hill and Emma Stone Open the Doors of Perception in Netflix’s Maniac

August 7, 2018
A mind is a terrible thing to taste in the latest dose of weirdness from Cary Fukunaga.

Cary Joji Fukunaga, who gave us the good season of True Detective and the esteemed Netflix movie Beasts of No Nation is back with Maniac, a new 10 part surreal drama for the ‘flix that seems to take its cues from the Paddy Chayeksky/Ken Russell joint Altered States, in that it deals with neuro-chemical experimentation breaking down the walls of reality. at least, we think that’s what’s going on…

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill are are human lab rats, undergoing a drug trial under the control of Justin Theroux’s shady scientist in the hopes that his alchemical cocktails can fix their broken brains. From there things get weird, as it seems the two are projected into a nested-box rabbit hole of alternate realities – or are they? You know how these things go.

Here’s something interesting, though: the characters’ names are Owen Milgrim and Annie Landsberg. what’s the signficance? Well. “Milgrim” is not a million miles away from Milgram, as in the famous Milgram experiment on submission to authority – that’s surely not a coincidence.  And Landsberg? Well, it’s a bit of a longer stretch, but Landsberg in Germany was the site of the Kaufering Concentration Camps in World War II. Surely that can’t be a coincidence…

Co-starring Sally Field, Julia Garner, and Sonoya Mizuno, Maniac hits Netflix on September 21, 2018.
