Well, this looks like fun.
Directed by Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone, Dheepan) and based on the novel by Canadian scribe Patrick deWitt (which has been on our “to read” pile for way too long, tbh), The Sisters Brothers follows the titular siblings, Charlie (Joaquin Phoenix) and Eli (John C. Reilly), two hitmen in the Old West on the trail of a chemist turned prospector, Hermann Kermit Warm (Riz Ahmed), who has concocted a weird method for finding gold – and apparently stolen from the murderous pair’s employer, The Commodore (Rutger Hauer – and yay for that). Bloodshed and strangeness ensue.
deWitt’s novel has been hailed as one of the best Westerns of recent years, Audiard is an absolute weapon of a filmmaker, and the cast is great – we haven’t even gotten to Jake Gyllenhaal, who crops up as a prospector of the Sisters’ acquaintance, and Carol Kane (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), who plays their no doubt eccentric mother. This is a film that you want on your radar.
Unfortunately there’s no release date yet, but expect an announcement soon, and think sometime before the New Year.
