The trailer for The Equalizer 2 is packed to the gills with cliches. Barely a second goes by without someone making some grim pronouncements about the imprudence of starting wars, how there’s no coming back from this, and so on and so forth, but if that’s the price of admission to see Denzel Washington once again essay the role Robert “World’s Toughest Pensioner” McCall, it’s one we’ll gladly pay.
It’s a shame, though, that we are apparently not getting a whole movie of The Equalizer equalizing because – and we have no doubt that someone will say this in the actual film – this time it’s personal. As the presser tersely tells us, “Denzel Washington returns to one of his signature roles in the first sequel of his career. Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed – but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?”
That “someone he loves” is apparently Melissa Leo’s shadowy CIA agent, and though their relationship always struck us as an amicable workplace friendship, clearly her endangerment is enough for McCall to shelve breaking the fingers of rapists for a while and bring the pain to… well, somebody who richly deserves it.
Given that the entire final act of the 2014 film is basically the tool shed sequence from Commando writ large, we can expect a stunning amount of violence when The Equalizer 2 hits Australian cinemas on July 19. In the meantime, please enjoy the utterly kick-ass original tile sequence, with music by The Police’s Stewart Copeland:
