We almost had Clint Eastwood directing Beyonce in this thing. We almost had a a very different movie, indeed – names which came and went in the film’s long gestation include Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Christian Bale, and Tom Cruise. When the dust of development settled, what we wound up with is Bradley Cooper, also making his directorial debut, as the mentor, and Stefani “Lady Gaga” Germanotta as the, er, mentee in this fourth take on A Star is Born, the classic tale of music, ambition, and doomed love.
The ’76 iteration, which starred Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, seems to be the biggest influence, though, with Coop riffing on KK pretty hard as hard-drinking country rocker Jackson Maine who finds his zest for life rekindled when he comes across nascent singer Ally (Gaga, of course) and takes her under his wing and into his bed. Indeed, it wouldn’t surprise us to learn that Kristofferson was considered for the role that eventually went to Sam Elliott (they are, for all intents and purposes, the same man). Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle both crop up in support.
Expect A Star is Born on October 4, 2018.
